The Hoe & The Gun
Stealing food aid. Civil war in Africa. Hitmen & a beautiful woman. Can war veteran Jowan Penrose flee & survive. And lastly – how much of this novel is based on fact and how much is pure fiction?
Fact or fiction
Author Chris Marrow has an extensive worldwide marine and shipping background and had some very threatening and challenging situations. But can they be found in The Hoe & The Gun? Buy to find out.
There are famous novels, particularly love stories, written in the context of civil wars. Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms" about the Spanish civil war being one. Whether "The Hoe and the Gun" will one day be seen in the same league we will have to wait to see. What is already clear is this book, although fiction, has a ring of truth. The author lived and worked in Mozambique during the time when fighting and corruption had forced millions of people to flee their homes. Getting food to these people was the responsibility of the well known International NGOs and UN agencies who appear in the book with comical pseudonyms. For anyone interested in Africa and the human stories that come out of these tragic humanitarian situations and who enjoys a.good adventure story, this is the right book. Sadly the corruption that drives the story is still adding to untold millions stolen from desperate people. As in this book, the Ministers are still in their Mercedes.
It is suspenseful, well-informed about the African landscape and waterways, and most of all meaningful beyond its appearance as a thriller - a cautionary tale about aid and its consequences. I like your book for it’s ring of truth.
Oh my God! I loved it. I’m in Africa when I’m reading your book! It’s a page turner. I find it extremely exciting.
Knowing what author Chris Marrow has done in his life and reading this amazing thriller I am amazed at the steep curves this novel takes throughout. A must read.
During the late 80s and early 90s, Chris Marrow was the inspiration and driving force behind a massive humanitarian effort to supply food to hundreds of thousands of people sheltering on off-shore islands in Mozambique. These people were fleeing for their lives from their homes and villages driven out by a horrible civil war. Chris is a visionary and tireless in making his visions come to life. I have never worked with a finer individual.”
