Many ask, before reading The Hoe & the Gun, why it has that title. This title is based on the Mozambique national flag and within the story line is the Mozambique Civil War.

The Mozambique flag was adopted on 1 May 1983. It includes the image of an AK-47 with a bayonet attached to the barrel crossed by a hoe, superimposed on an open book. … The rifle stands for defence and vigilance, the open book symbolises the importance of education, the hoe represents the country’s agriculture, and the star symbolises Marxism and internationalism.

The Mozambican Flag has been the subject of much debate as it is the only flag in the world to have a symbol of a modern weapon and as such many in the country want it to change.
